The late afternoon storm was in full effect before Vampire Weekend took the stage, but that didn’t stop the young combiners of indie rock and afrobeat from delivering track after track of poppy crowd-pleasers.
“Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa,” “Oxford Comma,” “APunk” and a new single entitled “White Sky” were all enjoyed, as the crowd of now muddied and poncho-wearing fans danced ecstatically through the dirt.
Although the Columbia boys seemed to be ordering around the stagehands a little too much like they were their butlers, they seemed otherwise humble and gracious. They thanked and commiserated with their soggy onlookers, doing all they could to raise some watery spirits.
“Be kind if one of us falls down,” Ezra Koenig suggested to the crowd, “it might happen.” No one ever did trip though, and it proved to be a pretty stand-up performance, one that helped distract the festival-goers from the oppressive elements.
