20 minutes after they were scheduled to, Tool took to the Blue Comet. A strange monologue about “computer gods” and “Frankenstein moon brains” played over the PA while the band got on stage. They took the front of the stage dressed all in white, while vocalist Maynard James Keenan remained in the back, all in black.
The chugging guitar riffs and double bass drumming of songs like “Stinkfist,” and “Forty-Six & 2” was set to bizarrely disturbing video images on the large screens on either side of the stage. Strange, androgynous naked sand humanoids pick at each other and danced about surreal subterranean landscapes while the set was carried out.
The crowd was full of masculine grunting and cheering, while the band digressed several times into long prog riffing sessions. The band’s single, “Schism,” from the album Lateralus, was drawn out into a nearly ten-minute long jam.
“Vicarious,” the first single from Tool’s newest album 10,000 Days, was the closing song, which was met with fierce appreciation by the raucous audience.
