I wonder if The National’s lending of their track “Fake Empire” to President Obama’s campaign last year helped them the land a spot on the main stage at APW.
Either way, the sadcore veterans were met warmly. With the first twang of guitarist Sott Devendorf’s guitar, he festival’s younger demographic swarmed the stage (which is surprising, these guys are starting to grey) at the first twang of guitarist Scott Devendorf.
They opened slowly with “Start a War,” but soon progressed towards more aggressive tracks like “Mistaken for Strangers,” which was supported by a noisy horn section, and “Apartment Story,” the angst-ridden post-emo anthem.
The set was a decidedly melodramatic one, but that’s sort of The National’s thing, and even after nearly a decade of it they are still being met with considerable support.
