After surviving a deadly plane crash almost a year ago in South Carolina, Adam Goldstein, also known as DJ AM was found dead in his New York City apartment this afternoon. He was 36 years old. A crack pipe and perscription pills were found at the scene, but the cause of death has not yet been determined.

Goldstein had a history of drug abuse. He publicly admitted to abusing crack, ecstasy, cocaine and perscription pills. At one point he was so mired in addiction, he attempted suicide by shooting himself in the head, but the gun jammed.

Goldstein claimed to be drug free for years and was helping others deal with their addictions on an MTV reality series called "Gone too Far," scheduled to air in October.

Various posts online indicate Goldstein may have been coping with a lot of guilt from the plane crash. A 2008 blog post on his website reads, "Daily I live with the guilt and grief of what happened that night, what I saw, who was lost and why I was spared. I have no words to express the pain that comes with knowing four people died, while I lived."

His last Twitter post, dated August 25th at 2:57 pm read the following Grandmaster Flash lyrics from "New York New York."

"NEW YORK, NEW YORK. BIG CITY OF DREAMS, BUT EVERYTHING IN NEW YORK AINT ALWAYS WHAT IT SEEMS."

We had just interviewed DJ AM last week about his new nightclub Dusk at Caesars in Atlantic City. Here's an excerpt:

Bo Bliz: What has your connection to Philadelphia been since you moved from here?

AM: I have always stayed in touch with my sister who still lives there and I get back there at lease every 2 months just to take a walk and remember my childhood. I love that city. Damn, bout to start crying! I am a mush ball when it comes to Philly!

He narrowly escapes death and then dies by trivializing life. What a d&*che. Got what he deserved.

Let me quote the AP story: "Police found a crack pipe and prescription pills in the Manhattan apartment, said a law enforcement official" and... "past addictions to crack cocaine, Ecstasy and other drugs, addictions so bad he once tried to commit suicide by shooting himself in the head — but the gun jammed." This guy was a real winner, let me tell you. Wouldn't have known anything about him unless he died. The world keeps on spinning regardless whether this guy (who got paid more money to entertain than teachers do to educate our children or the police paid to protect us) woke up tomorrow or not.

Well put Dicky. Death is never a joyous occasion, but in this case I feel as if this article is uncalled for. Does anyone really need to know this guy died. I'm sure that his family is very upset, but why does he deserve a front page story. what a waste of life. How many Marines have died in Afghanistan this week? How many ,made the front page. This article is a refelection of how backwards our celebrity/athlete worshiping society truly is.

Dicky is right but he forgot one factor:It's Hollywood hype. The general public eats it up.The boy had the life even as a kid . He had a talent. Music. He marketed himself and that talent. Rose to fame with his musical talent in that community crossed over to the Hollywood community when he dated and hung out with the popular crowd. After he walked away from that plane crash he did not listen to the message he was given: Give back and keep going.I wonder if the club in AC is going to close tonight. I wonder if the gig he has in Hollywood will still happen tonight? Yes Ihatesand it get front page attention .It's Hollywood . It's Saturday. A slow news day. It sells papers. Life goes on.

You people live with some very twisted logic. If you have a beef with how much teachers get paid or how many Marines make the front page of the paper, argue that with your favorite (or least favorite) media outlet. Don't piggyback your outrage with issues that have nothing to do with this story on the tragic death of a young man who was unable to deal with his demons. Your complete dismissal of a human life combined with using his dead body as a step-up to your podium is far more vulgar than a news paper making a bad choice for a front page story.

FrankRizzo: The example of "Marines on the front page" was simply an effort to shed light on our society's tendency to idolize the wrong types of people. I'm sure this guy was a unique and delicate flower, but the fact remains that he self-medicated to the point of death. I never displayed any "outrage" at this story. It more frustration than than outrage. It's not as if his life was taken by someone else, and his lack of appreciation for the second chance he was given makes it hard to express regret over "the tragic death of a young man who was unable to deal with his demons".
