An air of excitement permeated the room Friday night at Johnny Brenda’s, as dozens of eager fans crowded in to celebrate the release of Tremble the Sails, the sophomore album from local rock gods Buried Beds. And rightfully so! The quintet more than delivered, their rollicking set a delightful close to an evening of impressive hometown tunes.
Dr. Dog front man Scott McMicken opens the show, with a rare solo set of acoustic material. Seated on stage, clad in a fisherman’s hat and his trademark large sunglasses, McMicken remains stationary throughout—but still engages the audience with wily melodies and storied lyrics—about heartbreak, loneliness, the future, and more. His 40-minute set includes a cover of Dr. Dog’s “The breeze” (delicate, soothing) and a witty number about his unsavory first girlfriend—performed with smiles and much relish. “She didn’t like this song,” he tells the audience. “I guess it’s really kind of mean.”
